Aeration is essential for a healthy lawn. The soil in Indiana tends to compress over time due to a variety of variables such as foot traffic and weather. Aeration is important as it is the process of loosening the soil, which will make it easier for nutrients, water, and sunlight to reach the roots of your grass. The general rule is that lawns should be aerated once a year. Core aeration should be done in the fall, but if you missed the window for core aeration, don't worry, you can still schedule liquid aeration in the spring!
Why is aeration so important?
Over time, the thatch in your lawn can get thick, and the soil can become compacted. When this happens, it becomes difficult for essential nutrients, sunlight, and water to penetrate your soil and reach the roots of your grass. When the roots of your grass are able to absorb the essential nutrients that they need, your grass will be able to grow nice and strong. The two types of aeration are:
- Core aeration - This type of aeration method involves using an aeration machine to remove small cores of soil from your yard. When these plugs are removed, it creates pathways for the aforementioned nutrients to reach the roots of your turf.
- Liquid aeration - During this type of aeration, liquid formula is applied to your lawn. This formula will alleviate compacted soil to allow essential nutrients to reach the roots of your grass.
We offer overseeding directly after aeration, which will encourage new grass growth and help to fill in any bare or patchy areas of your lawn.
Your lawn should be aerated once annually.
To ensure that your lawn is as healthy as possible, you'll want to have it aerated once per year. Core aeration is performed in the fall, whereas liquid aeration is performed in the spring. Core aerating your lawn during fall encourages it to develop and build strong roots before winter.
Liquid aeration in the spring aids your lawn's recovery from the harsh winter conditions. This helps your soil regenerate new life and recover from any damage caused by the cold weather. It also provides the same benefits that core aeration does including making it easier for the roots of your grass to absorb nutrients, oxygen, water, and sunlight.
If you missed the window for core aeration, you should schedule liquid aeration in the spring.
If you missed the fall window, don’t fret, you can still schedule liquid aeration in the spring. Liquid aeration will provide the same main benefits as core aeration. What's more, scheduling liquid aeration in the spring will also help guide your grass out of winter dormancy. This means that your grass will bounce back nicely in the spring and help your turf remain healthy throughout the growing season.
