Overseeding In The Spring:

Why It Is a Waste Of Your Money!

Keeping your lawn healthy means having lawn care services performed at certain times of the year. A few of these services include having a liquid aeration in the spring and a core aeration and overseeding performed in the fall. At Precision Cutz Lawn Care, we always aerate and overseed in the fall. This is done in the fall because quite frankly, it is the best time to do it.

Overseeding your lawn is a very important step to getting the grass of your dreams. This is because overseeding adds new growth to your lawn. As the seeds germinate and form new root systems (which takes a few weeks, sometimes even up to a month), they will grow into the grass that’s already in your lawn, helping to strengthen your lawn. Overseeding also helps to fix any areas where your lawn may have thinned during the previous year. Having this new growth in your lawn will also help to fight off weeds, lawn insects and diseases.

With all of the benefits of overseeding, why do we not overseed in the spring? Overseeding in the spring is not only a waste of your time, but it is also a huge waste of your money! Overseeding in the spring will only lead you to having to again overseed in the fall. At Precision Cutz Lawn Care we generally do not recommend that anyone perform overseeding in the spring unless you are only doing small patches in your lawn.

When you overseed in the spring, the new grass blades will emerge just in time to deal with the heat of the summer. New grass blades are fragile when first growing in. So when they emerge in the summer, they will be beaten down by the hot sunlight leading them not able to establish a strong root system.

Precision Cutz Lawn Care performs overseeding in the months of September and October. These two months are chosen because we can get the seeds down before it gets too cold and before winter begins. This timing will allow the new grass time to germinate and start growing before it becomes dormant during the winter months. Overseeding in the fall will make sure the new seeds have a stronger root system and be ready for spring and the rest of the growing season the following season.

Part of keeping your lawn happy and healthy means doing the right things at the right times. Aerating and overseeding in the spring is a waste of your time and most importantly a waste of your money.
